Introduction

GĒR is a social network with e-commerce aspects where professional and amateur athletes can post and promote their favorite gear.

The Challenge

Social networks with an e-commerce focus was a unique idea, allowing everyday users to purchase equipment from the athletes they follow. We had to work out the strategy and logistics, constructing the user journeys from posting and interacting to saving products and buying. On top of creating the entire mobile network, we also had to draft pitch decks for GĒR executives to secure investors.

Solution

We began by looking at how other social networks were structured and what information they had within their profiles. Instagram gave us a lot of inspiration, but we had to come up with new flows to integrate the e-commerce aspect. Understanding how users decided to purchase gear was a huge part of the research process. Once we planned out the user flows, we started designing the basis of the platform with wireframes to gather the structure. We then ramped up to high fidelity, with the main challenge here being that we had to find higher-quality versions of the images and logos that the client provided to us.

We looked at other social media platforms to observe how sports enthusiasts were interacting, strategizing ways to connect them to their favorite athletes and brands.

Starting with wireframes, we designed the site to highlight top athletes and products. We then built the rest of the flows to accommodate the e-commerce structure.

GĒR’s unique angle to their social network allows everyday users to learn about and purchase the same gear as professional and amateur athletes. We researched other social media platforms like Instagram to gather information about our target personas. Planning out the user flows showed us how people would purchase gear and interact with other users. We then designed the platform for posters to tag their equipment and match the database for the e-commerce side, optimizing the flows as we went along.
Surfing.com was one of our biggest projects to date, and it continues to be ongoing with new features added every day, as well as more content in the form of videos. We continue to improve on speed/load times, as well as the onboarding flow for user profile creation. Our next steps are to create a mobile application.
